Analysing the decision of the Constitutional Court on the abolition of the article of the Criminal Code providing punishment for officials for illegal enrichment, it is important to pay attention to the names of people’s deputies who signed the corresponding constitutional appeal.
According to MP Yehor Soboliev from the “Samopomich Union” faction, these are the representatives of the “Petro Poroshenko Block”, “Narodnyi Front” and “The Opposition Bloc” factions. The parliamentarian notes, “They all fear this article.”
As for the Constitutional Court’s motivation in this matter, Yehor Soboliev says, “A judge of the Constitutional Court may be imprisoned for up to ten years in case he/she cannot explain the origin of his/her property. That scared them. As far as I know, Stanislav Shevchuk himself, chairman of the Constitutional Court, promoted this decision. We must now look at what kind of property he possesses.”
In addition, the lawmaker is also sceptical about the promises, of the President in particular, on the development of a new similar article of the Criminal Code. Yehor Soboliev emphasizes: “I think this is a hoax. Do you remember when Artur Herasymov (chairman of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction in the Verkhovna Rada) took an active part in adding a requirement to the law saying that public activists should also file their declarations, just like the officials whom they expose do? Back then both Petro Poroshenko and Artur Herasymov promised more than once that they would fix everything, but the Rada “accidentally” didn’t have enough votes for that.”
“They are celebrating today. We all need to think very well how we can cleanse both the Constitutional Court and the parliament from the people who neglect and disrespect the law,” the parliamentarian concludes.
