Viktoriya Voitsitska: How we all became accomplices in financing of the Russian occupation

For a long time we have been repeatedly told that in order to be independent from coal produced in the certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, it is necessary to raise prices to the world level, and then we will be able to buy coal at the world market and not from the occupied territories. The rapid growth in utility prices was supposed to become the price for the energy independence.

Now the trade blockade with the occupied territories has shown that there have never been a slightest intention to refuse buying either coal from the coalmines of the certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions or any other goods by purchasing which we are actually financing the occupation.

Trade with the occupier is immoral by definition, but in this situation one cannot even apply the notion of morale.

Because we all – each and every one of us! – by paying heating and energy bills, make it cheaper for the occupier to maintain the occupied territories. After all, we are the ones who pay for the purchase of coal from the certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions!

The authorities have made every Ukrainian an accomplice in the trade with the occupier. While the occupier allowed the occupied population to pay much less for the heat and energy.

The Parliament should pass the bill “On the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine”, which will recognize Russia as the occupier and prohibit trade with the occupied territories.

Otherwise, we will go on paying for the “happy” life of the “people’s republics”.

Take a look at the infographic comparing average prices for the tariffs for heat and electricity in Ukraine and in the occupied territories.

For the residents of DNR-LNR the tariffs are 2-6 times lower!
