Raising tariffs for street lighting by 2.5 times is an energetic racket – Voitsitska

“Samopomich” Union condemns the decision of the National Commission carrying out regulation in the sphere of energy and utilities to increase the cost of electricity used for outdoor lighting. This was said by MP, a member of the “Samopomich” Union faction, Secretary of the Committee on fuel and Energy Complex, Viktoriia Voitsitska, at a briefing in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

“The National Commission carrying out regulation in the sphere of energy and utilities has raised the cost of electricity used for outdoor lighting of towns and cities by nearly 2.5 times. It is absurd from the point of view of energy security. Due to the fact that electricity is produced around the clock and its utilization schedule is not even – in all the countries of the world night consumption of electricity is encouraged by preferential tariffs. France has zero tariffs for outside lighting altogether,” she said.

“Instead of encouraging night energy consumption, the country is being pushed into darkness. Dark streets mean a surge of crime, traffic accidents and injuries. All local budgets are formed based on the costs for lighting 2.5 times lower. The communities will be forced to choose of two evils: either to turn off the light and encourage crime, or to increase the expenses for lighting by 2.5 times, taking away money from other spheres. Such decisions of the National Commission carrying out regulation in the sphere of energy and utilities affect local budgets and weaken local government,” stated the MP.

“This decision is meaningless in terms of energy security and criminal since it is pushing the country into the darkness from which only criminals benefit.  “Samopomich” initiates lawsuits against illegal and unjustified decision of the National Commission. “Samopomich” also draws the attention of the President, who personally forms the Commission, to the fact that subordinate to him regulator is engaged in energy racketeering,” informed the deputy.
