With the support of the state Ukraine may become one of the leading countries providing medical services to foreign citizens. This was reported during parliamentary hearings on tourism by MP from the “Samopomich” Union faction, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Health, Iryna Sysoyenko.
“The profit from health tourism amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars. Developing these areas Ukraine can compete with other counties. After all, we have the three main priorities: good geographical location, availability of skilled medical representatives and affordable cost of health care, which is much lower than in other countries,” said the MP.
According to her, development of medical tourism is possible even under conditions of internal instability, which is confirmed by the examples of Israel and Turkey. However, the industry requires significant government support, in the first place the informational one.
“We ourselves aren’t always aware of our capabilities. For example, the Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery has a technology of heart coronary-bypass surgery the mortality rate of which is only 0.5%, whereas in the US it makes 1.3%. Nearly 10 thousand operations have been performed using the technology. A similar technology is used only in 5 clinics throughout the world. The achievements demonstrated by specialists in ophthalmology, reconstructive surgery, dentistry, plastic surgery are not less significant,” emphasized the parliamentarian.
“We need to adopt the European standards of healthcare, promote the medical services of our country abroad, and simplify the visa regime for the patients who come for treatment to Ukraine,” summed up the MP.
