Ukraine must make Russia accountable – Sydorovych

Ukrainian state has the right to demand compensation for the damages caused by Russian aggression and annexation of the Crimea; however, the government does not do this. This was declared from the parliamentary rostrum by MP from the “Samopomich” Union faction, a member of the Committee on Legal Policy and Justice, Ruslan Sydorovych.

“It’s been two years of Russian aggression against Ukraine, two years of Russia  appropriating the assets of Ukraine, appropriating the property of our citizens, which has resulted in our bearing huge losses. But what is Ukraine doing about that? No idea,” he said.

According to the MP, Ukraine can file a lawsuit against Russia in international courts to obtain compensation for the huge losses caused by the occupation of the territories.

“We should have held a demand against Russia long ago for the damages caused by the military aggression, the annexation of the Crimea and the East, those losses that our citizens suffered as a result of destruction of their property, business, health,” the lawmaker noted.

“What are we waiting for? We are always asking for help from our Western partners in terms of pressure on Russia and financial sanctions which are supposed to weaken it economically. But if we do not act ourselves and expect that someone will do our work for us, nothing will happen. And our partners will turn away from us,” he added.

“I demand the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs to show what claims have been filed, what exactly Ukraine has done to bring Russia to the financial responsibility for all the damages and suffering that it has caused Ukraine,” called on the MP.
