We should gradually move from quantitative to qualitative characteristics of defence capacity, – Semenchenko

Adopted today law №2269 «On the Number of the Armed Forces of Ukraine” allows to increase the number of troops, but not to increase their quality. This was stated by First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on National Security and Defence Semen Semenchenko.

Despite this, the “Samopomich” Union faction and its military MPs supported the bill because it allows to take the necessary now steps to protect the country.

But in the long term, according to Semen Semenchenko, it is necessary to change the approach to the formation of the army. In particular, we need to move from quantitative to qualitative characteristics of defence capacity.

“This can’t be done overnight, but we have to understand that the very war, unfortunately, won’t end tomorrow either. Therefore, we are preparing for registration a bill that will, first of all, enhance the motivation of military men, and secondly, will allow people who do not want to fight – to perform alternative service or to make special contributions instead of service,” – he said.

In his opinion, the adoption of such legislative changes will let form a professional army of fifty thousand, which will take professional training and have the appropriate technical support and social guarantees.

“The army of the trained locally reservists will be strengthening the troops according to the Swiss model. And this is our common goal for the future,” – he explained.

At the same time, according to the deputy, now a different model is operating, and it can’t be hampered, that is why the bill №2269 was supported.
