Judges who reposed power in hands of Yanukovych want to repeal the law on lustration – Soboliev

The judges who are targeted in the investigation by the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Security Service on the issue of facilitating Viktor Yanukovych’s usurpation of power will review the bill on “power cleansing” in terms of its compliance with the Constitution of Ukraine during their next meeting. This was reported from the parliamentary rostrum by MP, a member of the “Samopomich” Union faction, chairman of the Anti-Corruption Committee, Yehor Soboliev.

“I want to inform the Parliament and all citizens that on March 22, next Tuesday, the Constitutional Court will meet for the third time in order to repeal the law on “power cleansing”. All the possible deadlines have passed for the judgement to be delivered. The public, together with MPs and concerned government officials have twice gathered and defended the law from the attacks. However, now when the President is bargaining for a new government, those members of Yanukovych’s team whom the law forbids to be appointed to any positions, even of a police officer, are involved in the bargaining process,” said the parliamentarian.

“The very judges of the Constitutional Court want to repeal this law because what we have inherited from the Yanukovych’s times is the fact that a third of all the judges remain the same. These people have been suspected for more than a year by the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Security Service in the promotion of power usurpation. The current head of the Constitutional Court, Baulin, is being investigated for the cases in which, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, a known to be wrongful judgement was delivered, which entailed grave consequences and the usurpation of power by Yanukovych. It is clear that these judges have no right to review the law on lustration, they do not have the right to be judges of the Constitutional Court, but they do remain in office, under the auspices of the President and the Prosecutor General,” he said.

“I ask the lawmakers and all citizens – let us meet on Tuesday morning at the Constitutional Court and defend the legal power cleansing from those who pollute it,” called the people’s deputy.
