“To keep the Customs Service’s and the State Fiscal Service’s chiefs in office means to blink reality and to turn a blind eye to the information about abuses,” Oleh Bereziuk, chairman of the “Samopomich” Union faction, commented on the approval of the report of the State Fiscal Service’s head, Roman Nasirov, at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Taxation and Customs Policy.
“I can feel really revolutionary sentiments: everybody who works at customs knows that a single customs generates a billion in a month; and that there are searches conducted in the companies that work by the law, in order to pressurize them and get more money. Everyone knows this; nevertheless, we are saying that everything is alright. This is ignorance of the reality in the 21st information century.”
The MP also hopes for the political will of the new Prime Minister of Ukraine, Volodymyr Hroisman, “I hope for the courage of the Prime Minister of Ukraine. He has already made several personnel changes which are very relevant. Personnel changes in the tax structures won’t be just a punishment of the current head of the tax agency, it will also be a signal to the public about the changes.”
In addition, Oleh Bereziuk urged law enforcement agencies not to distract people with “Yanukovych’s case” from the offenses of the current chiefs, in particular those at customs. However, the investigation of the ex-President’s crimes should be continued within the framework of the existing legislation. “The Prosecutor General’s Office and the National Police should deal with those who are now stealing billions from Ukraine. The Yanukovych issue is a “cover” for the inaction of law enforcement agencies with respect to the abuses at customs, state-owned enterprises and in the use of the state budget.”
