Thanks to the timely reaction of MP from the “Samopomich” Union faction, Iryna Sysoyenko, it was possible to stop the initiative of some officials of the Ministry of Health to transfer to the regions on a voluntary basis expired “Tamiflu” drugs.
January 27, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Health, Iryna Sysoyenko, made public the offer of Deputy Minister of Health to transfer “Tamiflu” drugs which remained at SE “Ukrvaktsina” warehouse since 2009 and that are past their expiry date. According to the plan, 105,176 packages of expired “Tamiflu” were supposed to be sent to the regions on a voluntary basis of local authorities.
The Law of Ukraine “On Medicines” in article 23 stipulates that substandard medicines, including those expired, are subjects to disposal and destruction, thus such a proposal the Ministry of Health is in fact a violation of the applicable law.
“Since the drugs are expired, I am largely concerned how to prevent the use of such drugs by patients, so I appealed to Minister Kvitashvili to comment on this. I also demand that the Ministry of Health take urgent measures to utilize the expired “Tamiflu” drugs,” said Iryna Sysoyenko.
The Health Ministry reacted immediately denying such a decision on the official website. However, the agency noted that the letter of offer signed by the Deputy Minister was a “piece of internal and classified documentation”.
“I am glad we managed to make the Ministry of Health response immediately, the drugs will be destroyed and no one will suffer from substandard care. But when it comes to life and health of our citizens, no internal correspondence is acceptable: all decisions and proposals of the relevant body must be published and discussed. The disease spreads, the number of victims is growing and we must take responsibility for solving the problem, admit mistakes and correct them quickly, because behind each officials’ “internal document” there are lives of thousands of people!” said Sysoyenko.
