The “Samopomich” Union faction supported the resolution on dismissal of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Viktor Shokin, but insists that appointments to this position should take place only on the results of an open competition among the candidates. This was said from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada by MP from the “Samopomich” Union faction, chairman of the anti-corruption committee, Yehor Soboliev.
“Overnight into Sunday a person who had received 408 rifles and 90,000 rounds of ammunition for shooting people at Maidan, who was suspected of organizing murders with the help of “titushky” in those terrible days, left the remand prison. This is the symbol, the bottomline of Shokin’s being in office. He failed to investigate a single case over Euromaidan murders and terror; a single case over corruption of senior officials. Strictly speaking, this is what he had been appointed for – to cover up top corruption and Euromaidan cases,” MP explained the position of the faction.
“Brilliant prosecutors” case, which was a chance to change the Prosecutor General’s Office, to break the mutual covering-up system in all the law enforcement agencies, has not just been burked – Shokin took care for the last person handling the matter, Davit Sakvarelidze, to be dismissed,” said the parliamentarian.
“We voted against the appointment of Viktor Shokin. As an opposition party, “Samopomich” asks not to repeat the same mistakes and to appoint the next Prosecutor General following a competition, for the new Prosecutor General to be an independent person, and not just another friend of the President who will cover up corruption,” said Yehor Soboliev.
