Chornomorsk deputies appealed to the Verkhovna Rada with a request to hold parliamentary elections with open lists

The deputies of Chornomorsk city council of Odesa region appealed to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine with a request to immediately adopt a high-quality new law of Ukraine “On elections” which will provide for open lists election system.

“It is very important for the new parliamentary elections to be held according to a new democratic law. It is important for people to see whom they choose – opinion leaders, activists, experts, not corruptionists and oligarchs’ puppets,” the statement reads.

The initiators of the appeal are the deputies of the “Samopomich” Union – one of the few political forces which opened the lists of candidates in the last local elections in 2015. The chairman of the faction in Chornomorsk city council, Ivan Smirenskyi, is pleasantly surprised that most of his fellow deputies supported the appeal. According to him, adoption of this law will reduce the stress in the parliament, as well as will make the activities of the authorities more transparent to the public.

“There was hardly a single politician during the last elections to the Verkhovna Rada who did not promise to introduce open lists. Over the two years virtually all the political forces that got into the parliament have forgotten their promises, Smirenskyi says. It is a pity that of all the deputies of Chornomorsk city council only the chairman of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc, Yuriy Buzko, did not support our appeal, even though the President himself has repeatedly declared the need for changes to the electoral law.”
