August 17, about 300 people gathered for a rally against the tyranny of the Prosecutor General’s Office and in order to support the Anti-Corruption Bureau. “Samopomich” MPs, Viktoriia Voitsitska, Lev Pidlisetskyi, and Yehor Soboliev, also joined the protest.
“Today’s situation is the following – they are trying to get the country back to the era of Yanukovych. And they want to use us in doing this,” said Soboliev during the protests at the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The rally was held due to an inadmissible fact of detention and torturing of the Anti-Corruption Bureau’s employees by the Prosecutor General’s Office. According to Samopomich MP, this spontaneous protest aims to support the work of the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Soboliev believes it is very important for the new people who are trying to fight corruption in the Prosecutor’s Office.
“In fact, Lutsenko has two ways out. He either dismisses and prosecutes the corrupt prosecutors, or becomes an accomplice,” said Soboliev.
“Now people can see that the new legislation gives the opportunity for new people (National Anti-Corruption Bureau – Ed) to actually carry out their duties. What we want is simple – the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Prosecutor General’s Office should be racing each other investigating this shameful case. And if it is proven that this has actually happened, those involved in this have to go to jail for abuse of power. The present situation is a unique one; do not be afraid, do not let them get you back into the era of Yanukovych. It’s impossible to build a new state without involvement of the society. Remember about the rallies, the trials against volunteers, e-declaration. For when we come together we reach the goal.”
