Lies in declarations can land officials in jail for 2 years, Soboliev

Today, 31 August, the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection issued a security certificate to the system of e-declarations. Thus, from September 1the system of electronic declarations will start operating in full.
“Starting with this night and within 60 days all MPs, ministers, the President – all high-level officials without exception – must file the declaration of income and property of their families via the Internet. Failure to submit the declaration or concealment of property to the value of more than 362,500 hryvnias is now considered a crime,” said MP from the “Samopomich” faction, Yehor Soboliev.
The maximum penalty is imprisonment for up to two years, with disqualification to hold certain positions or to be engaged in certain activities for up to three years.
One of the greatest advantages of this system is that all the declarations will be available to citizens on the Internet, at nazk.gov.ua website.
“For many years the tax office has been reluctant to inspect the officials’ declarations. Presently it’s all in the hands of citizens. For this end back last year we opened the property registers. Thus, any public organization, or a team of journalists can become an Agency for Corruption Prevention which will study whether officials’ belongings correspond to their salaries,” said Soboliev.
In addition, according to the deputy, in the coming days a technology for such kind of a joint public control will be suggested.
