The parliament has adopted a law on optimization of the number of employees of the prosecutor’s office, abolishing the earlier adopted changes on the reduction of the number of prosecutors. Samopomich Union faction did not support this bill, since, in the opinion of its members, it is necessary not only to reduce the number of prosecutors, but also the range of their functions.
“Working in the Constitutional Commission and working on the changes to the Constitution in the part of the justice bloc, we have elaborated the necessary changes for the prosecutor’s office. Then we talked about changing the philosophy of the work of the law enforcement system, that the prosecutor’s office should stop taking on roles that are not inherent in it, but rather deal with only two things: the support of the state prosecution in court and procedural leadership.
Secondly, the explanatory note to the bill says that this will not affect the budget indicators. But tell me, please, 15,000 prosecutors or 10,000 – doesn’t this affect the budget? Obviously, it does. We need to work consistently and reduce not only the number of prosecutors, but also the range of their functions, as well as build the legal system that will serve the interests of the people, not the prosecutor’s office,” says Samopomich MP Ruslan Sydorovych.
