According to MP Yehor Soboliev of the Samopomich faction, the basic manipulations connected with the creation of the Anti-Corruption Court will concern the selection of the judges. He emphasizes, “That is why we suggest involving international experts in the selection process. It’s good that majority of the parliamentarians agrees with this, but there is one hazard.”
Thus, according to the people’s deputy, it is now proposed that these should be international organisations that will provide these experts. However, the generalization of wording in the draft law can give room for falsifications. We have already had a similar situation when an auditor of NABU from the parliament was chosen and part of the MPs were trying to push a candidacy of a Nigel Brown, which had not even been viewed by the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada.
Proceeding from this, Yehor Soboliev concludes, “We believe it should be clearly stated in the law that the international experts will be recommended to us by the governments of the states that provide Ukraine with assistance in countering corruption – the government of the United States and the European Union itself. Then we can be sure to get first-class experts who will help us select the anti-corruption judges of the Anti-Corruption Court.”
