There are four days left for Ukrainian officials to fill out electronic declarations. As noted by the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Preventing and Combating Corruption, Samopomich Union faction deputy, Yehor Soboliev, despite the big sabotage of the process, the country has overcome the resistance and it is on its way to what is the norm for officials in all civilized countries of the world.
“Two months ago even supporters couldn’t believe this might happen. They said, “What’s the point? They will find a way to amend the legislation at the last moment, they will hack the website, and so on.” But as a result, today even the Prime Minister had to open his millions of dollars in cash, and this is the most important moment of truth for the society,” says Yehor Soboliev.
According to the MP, electronic declarations, openness of the officials’ property will not stop corruption overnight. However, they will allow people to learn who from the officials, to whom they have entrusted governance of the country, work for the very country and who work for their own enrichment.
“This will be the most important historic step. In 5-10 years, we will recollect these days understanding that this was the turning point, when all the officials really became accountable. I am very glad that, despite the huge sabotage, attempts to rewrite and redo, the law on the prevention of corruption starts bearing fruit. There are still several hundreds of the most important state officials who have not submitted their declarations. However, no one will be able to evade responsibility, and I am sure that by Sunday all the declarations will be filed. Those who don’t file their declarations will be under the investigation of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine,” said MP.
