We need to adopt a number of decisions aimed at strengthening the institutional role of the parliament in controlling the President and the executive branch by the end of the current parliament’s term. MP Ruslan Sydorovych is convinced of the necessity of such a step.
First of all, it is necessary to adopt the draft law “On the President of Ukraine” developed by Samopomich. The document eliminates the dual power in Ukraine and establishes fuses for the Head of State under the current Constitution. The MP emphasizes: “We do not choose a king, we chose a president. The parliament should control the president, the president should be accountable to the people through the parliament. No president, regardless of who he/she is, can do whatever he/she pleases. There must be control.
Secondly, it is necessary to adopt a law on temporary investigatory commissions, because these commissions are the most important instrument of parliamentary control.
Thirdly, it is necessary to make senior officials accountable to citizens. It is necessary to eliminate the situations that arise now, when, for example, some ministers ignore invitations to the meetings of the Verkhovna Rada committees. Ruslan Sydorovych is convinced: “All politicians, deputies, the president, the government must report regularly. People need to understand what we are doing in order to give not emotional, but weighted and logical assessment to our actions.”
The parliamentarian recalls that during the political crises of 2004 and 2014, Ukraine preserved its statehood thanks to the Verkhovna Rada precisely.
“Therefore, it is vital to strengthen the role of the parliament,” concludes Ruslan Sydorovych.
