“More than 170 communities are deprived of the right to choose” – Sadovyi

For months, sometimes even years, 177 communities in Ukraine are left with no leader. Tomorrow is actually the last day when the Verkhovna Rada can vote on the appointment of elections this year in such cities, villages, and towns that were left without leaders due to death, resignation or suspension.

The leader of Samopomich, Andriy Sadovyi, notes that the authorities benefit from the fact communities have no leaders.

“I do not know a single case when the President or the Prime Minister needed some kind of decision from the Verkhovna Rada, and this would not happen. Everything is done instantly. The most striking example is when the law was changed in order to appoint the Prosecutor General with no law degree.

And this issue is not voted! Even though everyone is talking about the importance of decentralization. Why? Because it is beneficial to them that there are no heads. It is easy to manipulate cities in such a way and extract resources from them. Decentralization is, above all, the right to choose. And Ukrainians are deprived of it.”

Sadovyi draws the example of the Sribniansk united territorial community in the Chernihiv region. The chairman of the community, Oleh Kudelia was elected on October 29, 2017. A month later, right at the first session following the administration of the oath, the deputies from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc initiated voting and dismissed him. For more than a year this community has been left without a leader. More than two years have passed since the death of the mayor of Lutsk – the Verkhovna Rada has not appointed elections either.

“It is necessary for the Verkhovna Rada to immediately vote for this decision and announce elections in 177 communities. Unless this is done, then all the talks about decentralization are just a fraud. The Samopomich faction in the parliament will demand that the decision on the appointment of early elections in communities left without leaders should be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada tomorrow,” added Andriy Sadovyi.
