Olena Sotnyk: Referring to Minsk agreements in the PACE resolution on Ukraine was incorrect

Although much of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe did support the resolution on functioning of democratic institutions in Ukraine, MP representing the Samopomich Union faction, Olena Sotnyk, voted against.
The politician admits that the document contains positive features, but underscores the threat it poses due to the resolution’s references to the Minsk agreements and even to the special status of Donbas.
“Firstly, I believe it is extremely unfair that it is Ukraine that is mentioned in connection with the Minsk agreements and the duty of Ukraine to implement them.
Secondly, the last provision of the political agreements is unacceptable, in particular, the special status of Donbas,” emphasizes Olena Sotnyk.
She is confident that any mentioning of the Minsk agreements in the document was incorrect altogether, since the report concerned only the domestic situation regarding the reforms in Ukraine.
In addition, the Council of Europe and the Assembly should take into account that Ukraine is a victim of Russian aggression. “This means that they must exercise every opportunity to pressurize the Russian Federation to make it fulfill the specific points of the Minsk agreements, in particular the first paragraph on security issues, that means to cease fire at least,” emphasizes the MP.
Speaking about the possible consequences of the resolution, Olena Sotnyk concludes, “It’s true that today we don’t see any rigorous requirements in it, but it can be used in the future, by the representatives of the Assembly among others, in various kinds of manipulations.”
