“Ukraine’s budget today is of the size of Berlin’s budget,” says Vice-Speaker Oksana Syroyid. She explains, “Why do we live in a state that has such a budget? Look at the city of Kryvyi Rih. This city has very rich land. So how come it is not using its resources? This is because this land belongs to monopoly ownership.”
While the recipe of successful and wealthy cities is simple: “Only two preconditions are needed for people to live in prosperity – the taxes from the land that generates wealth should be paid in Ukraine and then fairly redistributed”.
Oksana Syroyid, just like the entire Samopomich party, insists that the money should stay with the communities. And she also encourages Ukrainians to join this demand, “I want the deputies of city councils to unite and demand from the Verkhovna Rada and the government the redistribution of taxes. The environmental fee and the rent for subsoil use should remain in the local budgets. After all, the territory that generates money should be the one receiving this money.”
