These days, the Parliamentary Assembly of Ukraine and the Republic of Poland is taking place in Warsaw. The deputies of the Verkhovna Rada and the Sejm are discussing joint actions aimed at blocking the construction of the Nord Stream-2, the possibilities of boosting Ukraine’s cooperation with the EU and NATO, and the cooperation in the sphere of youth exchange.
As noted by the Vice Speaker of the Parliament Oksana Syroyid during the opening of the meeting, the security of the entire European continent will depend on whether or not the cooperation between Ukraine and Poland will be successful.
First of all, we are talking about the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, “Recently, it was estimated and publicized that the pay-off period of the Nord Stream will last for more than 50 years. And this is the greatest proof that Russia has no economic benefit in this project. It is obvious that Russia that has excess capacities to transport gas to Europe will abuse these capacities and use them to gain geopolitical benefits in this region.”
According to Oksana Syroyid, the new gas pipeline is a weapon that Russia is definitely going to use against Europe one day; it is just a matter of time. But in addition to the Nord Stream pipeline, there are still many other Russian threats that are very close and which must be treated very seriously.
“In particular, there are at least 100,000 Russian troops located along the border with Ukraine and close to the borders with Poland and the Baltic states. A nuclear base is being established in the Crimea. Who will this be used against? Obviously, not only against Ukraine. So we have to think together how to protect ourselves from this,” the Vice Speaker emphasized.
According to Oksana Syroyid, Ukraine and Poland are at an advantage in a way because of their understanding of the threat Russia poses, “This gives strength and energy to our cooperation, which I think we should use much more actively. But, on the other hand, this will also provoke Russia to interfere in both our internal affairs and our bilateral relations.
Therefore, we all will need endurance, wisdom and a lot of joint work to find solutions that will help us become stronger and resist the challenges that await us in the near future.”
