According to the chairman of the Samopomich faction, Oleh Bereziuk, among US congressmen there is support for the position of Samopomich regarding recognition of Ukrainian territories as temporarily occupied, “Ukraine must legally recognize that Russia attacked us, it is its aggression, and part of the Ukrainian territories are temporarily occupied. The country has been at war for three years. The Crimea and Donbas have been under the occupation for three years.
How can we explain this? How can we explain the status of prisoners of war? How can people in the occupied territories live – when there are no laws there – either Ukrainian, or Russian, or any international laws. The law on the occupied territories sets a legal order. In Congress we felt support for our position concerning this. It is also very important that American congressmen are ready to work on a general resolution to support Ukraine’s actions in recognizing the fact that these territories are occupied. By and large, this has been long expected from Ukraine, because this is the decision to be made by the state itself.
While in the US, people’s deputies of the Samopomich Union have also held a number of meetings in the Senate, Congress, Pentagon, and the White House. As noted by the chairman of the faction, Ukraine has good support among its American partners, “There are 560 million dollars of financial support for Ukraine, 150 million of them for military needs. However, there is certain caution. First of all, the amount of money for military needs might be reduced. Secondly, and most importantly, the law on the extension of sanctions against Russia is being delayed. This is a consequence of the influence of Russian propaganda, on American policy among other things. In addition, Samopomich deputies when meeting with American partners have been discussing the possibility of providing lethal weapons to Ukraine. “With this kind of weapon we will be able to protect Ukraine from further aggression and liberate the occupied territories when the time comes,” Oleh Bereziuk said.
