The Verkhovna Rada has supported the appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to provide Tomos of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. This is not the first such decision of the parliament (in 2016, the Verkhovna Rada has already appealed to the Ecumenical Patriarch).
However, the hysterical reaction of the “Opposition bloc” – whose members even decided to block the rostrum – testifies to the seriousness of the current intentions. These people allege that the state cannot interfere in religious affairs.
This is nothing more than the hypocrisy of the defenders of the so-called “Third Rome”!
For the clarity of understanding of their hypocrisy at its best – I want to remind about one curious historical fact.
In 1589, Moscow prince Boris Godunov invited Patriarch of Jeremiah II of Constantinople to Moscow allegedly with a proposal to move to Moscow from Constantinople, captured by the Ottomans (present-day Istanbul). Instead, the latter was actually taken hostage, kept in captivity for half a year and forced under the threat of physical destruction to grant the non-canonical Moscow Metropolitan the title of Patriarch.
And these people are preaching us about legitimacy?
