Today, the Kyiv City Council adopted in the first reading a draft decision providing for the creation of a museum of the history of Kyiv instead of building a shopping center in Poshtova Square.
97 deputies supported the document drafted by the chairman of the Samopomich faction in the city council Serhiy Husovskyi.
The draft resolution suggests terminating the contract with the investor of the construction of an underground shopping and entertainment centre in Poshtova Square LLC “Hensford-Ukraine” and taking over the unfinished construction project into the communal property of Kyiv. In addition, the document refers to the conclusion of an agreement with the State Enterprise “Kyiv Archeology Centre of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine” on the extension of archaeological works and holding an open international competition for the best project of the future museum.
“The voting for this draft decision demonstrates the true attitude to our city and its past. If we have respect for history, we have chances for a brighter future,” comments Serhiy Husovskyi. According to the deputy, the final document also takes into account the proposals of scientists and historians on the creation of the future museum.
The voting was preceded by a theatrical performance “Battle for the Historical Kyiv” outside the building of the Kyiv City Council. Activists performed a symbolic battle between illegal developers and defenders of ancient Kyiv.
