“It is very important for us to adopt a law recognizing reality” – Oleh Bereziuk

As noted by the chairman of the Samopomich faction in the parliament, this week can become an important week in the history of the Ukrainian state, because the parliament might adopt a law on the reintegration of Donbas – as the President calls it – or the law on reality.

“It is very important that we adopt a law that would say that the aggressor – the Russian Federation – occupied part of the Ukrainian territory, and indicate a specific date. This would help those who remained in the occupied territories to be protected by international law. This would also help our guys who are captured – they will become de jure prisoners of war. This would help Ukraine tell the whole world that in the center of Europe there is a brutal and blood-shedding war between Eastern despotism and Western democracy. And Ukraine is the first redoubt of this Western democracy.

But this will only happen when Ukraine adopts a proper decision and tells the world and its people about this,” says Oleh Bereziuk.

The MP also draws attention to the inadmissibility of the provision of the bill, according to which the President can actually dispose of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at his discretion: “When the mankind and society began to develop, every ruler, emperor, king wanted to use the armed forces in the interests of his defense. But when parliaments appeared, they first of all took control of how rulers use the army – against their own people or against the enemy. In this law we must ensure that the Ukrainian army is used exclusively against the enemy while defending the Ukrainian people.”

In addition, the chairman of the faction underscored the importance of civil control over the defense budget, which is completely closed today. “In this law and in the budget of the country we must say that the expenses of the Ukrainian state on defense have to be transparent for civil and parliamentary control. Then the money of Ukrainian people will create the Ukrainian army which will be the guarantee of Ukrainian independence,” Oleh Bereziuk sums up.
