The building of the Verkhovna Rada will be illuminated in sign of uniting efforts in the fight against tuberculosis

On March 22, 2018, at 18.30, the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (5 Hryshevskoho St.) will be solemnly illuminated with red colour.

The building will also highlight the call – “We will overcome tuberculosis together!” This is how the Ukrainian society together with MPs, the head of the Ministry of Health, heads of state and public organizations, representatives of international organizations, activists from among the patients will demonstrate to the world the united efforts and Ukraine’s commitment to the fight against tuberculosis (TB).

Before the beginning of the action, at 16.30, the Parliamentary Platform for the Fight against Tuberculosis, with the support of partners, will organize a roundtable meeting for public consultation on recommendations to Ukraine’s political statement on tuberculosis, which will be published in September this year at the UN General Assembly.

Following the roundtable meeting and prior to the solemn start of the illumination, there will be a press briefing at the central entrance to the parliament building. The briefing will be attended by:

Serhiy Kiral, people’s deputy of Ukraine, Chairman of the Parliamentary platform for fighting tuberculosis.

Uliana Suprun, acting Minister of Health of Ukraine.

Volodymyr Kurpita, Director General of the Public Health Centre of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Serhiy Filippovych, Director of the Department of Treatment, Procurement and Supply Management of the International Charitable Foundation “Alliance of Public Health”.

Dmytro Sherembey, chairman of the coordinating council of the Charitable Organization “All-Ukrainian Network of PLWH”.

Olha Klymenko, a public activist, a woman who has defeated tuberculosis.

James Malar, the support team for countries and communities for impact, “Stop TB Partnership”.

It is for the first time that an international information campaign on the occasion of the World TB Day is held in Ukraine at such a level. The “Light up the world for TB” campaign is founded by the “Stop TB Partnership” and is held this year under the slogan “Wanted: Leaders for a TB-free World. You can create history. Let’s overcome TB.”

The organizers of the event are the inter-factional parliamentary association “Parliamentary platform for fighting TB” with the support of the international charitable foundation “Alliance of Public Health”, which acts as the coordinating centre of civil society organizations in the work with the international movement of parliamentarians “Global Caucus against TB”.

The goal of the campaign is to attract attention of the world community to the current problem of TB in Ukraine. Every year, more than 4,000 people die from TB in our country, every day – about 10 patients. Indirect economic losses in connection with this amount to more than $12 million annually. Although a certain improvement in the situation has been recorded in recent years, 21,995 new cases of tuberculosis were registered in 2017 alone. At the same time, according to WHO, about 20% of cases in Ukraine are not detected, and the main problem is the emergence of resistant tuberculosis (insensitive to traditional medicines), which requires a longer and more costly treatment and has lower chances for a successful outcome.

Accreditation for the press briefing and illumination at 18.30 is not necessary. Accreditation for the roundtable meeting: Olesia Matusevych, phone number: 097-430-54-40[email protected] (entrance with accreditation cards through the 1st entrance).
