Ukraine should step up its sanctions against Russia and take up an increasingly tough stance against the aggressor. This is emphasized by the chairman of the Samopomich Union faction Oleh Bereziuk.
“Banning the entry for male Russians between 16 and 60 years old is not enough. We need serious restrictions to prevent the occurrence of sabotage groups that may become a source of instability in the country. Because this is the goal of our eternal enemy – Russia.”
Ukrainian seamen from the captured vessels should be freed by a third party, since they are prisoners of war, says Oleh Bereziuk. “We have to engage a third party – it could be Switzerland, Sweden and other countries that have experience in this. There are relevant conventions, and the role of the third party is very important.”
In addition, the involvement of a third party levels the arguments of opponents about the termination of diplomatic relations with the aggressor. These are not the consuls who should set free the captives, but the third party.
What the state is going to do now following the act of aggression in the Kerch Strait – to apply to international courts – should have been done at least 5 months ago.
“The Ukrainian navy spoke of the threat of the occupation in the Sea of Azov and the obstacles to Ukraine’s controlling this territory back in June-May of this year. But the President and the government ignored this and let an outright aggression take place, which today poses a threat to our sovereignty and statehood.”
