“The first exchange of opinions,” the leader of the Samopomich Union faction, Oleh Bereziuk, commented on the meeting of the newly elected President V. Zelensky with the leaders of the parliamentary factions. Bereziuk was one of the few faction chairs present.
At this meeting, Zelensky suggested the inauguration date – May 19. According to the Samopomich representative, there is no problem concerning this date.
“The sooner the President starts working, the sooner he will assume responsibility for what he promised and wants to do. I see no threats in this.”
For its part, the parliament will formally consider this proposal during the next plenary week.
We have also talked about the possibility of dissolution of the parliament. According to the leader of the Samopomich Union faction, there is no tragedy in this either:
“It is easy to dissolve the parliament. But the question is what to do then? There is the issue of elections, adoption of new legislation that would meet the interests of society. I have personally underscored the fact that this parliament has a huge debt. Whether it will be dissolved or not, we still have the duty to abolish deputies’ immunity.”
According to Bereziuk, a lot was discussed: the issue of foreign policy was raised; Zelensky’s vision of domestic policy, relations with the parliament were inquired about. It is about developing a policy of mutual understanding and trust, said Bereziuk:
“Unfortunately, previous presidents did not have a trusting relationship with the parliament. And it should be noted that the newly elected President personally came to the parliament to meet with the leaders of the factions, to talk to them. This is something new in the history of Ukrainian parliamentarism and the construction of the Ukrainian state.”
